An Invitation to Researchers from Cruickston

Cruickston Charitable Research Reserve or CCRR is a charitable organization that owns lands consisting of diverse landscapes of natural habitats and farmlands, situated at the interface of the Northern Hardwoods and Carolinian zones in the Region of Waterloo, Ontario.

Goals of CCRR

  • Provide opportunities for field research in conservation biology, restoration ecology, archaeology, environmental education, geology and organic farming.
  • Develop an international reputation as a location to conduct research involving long-term field studies or experiments in these areas.
  • Use the research to maintain the ecological integrity of Cruickston in perpetuity.

CCRR’S Mandate: Importance of Conservation & Restoration Ecology

  • CCRR recognizes that understanding “the flux of nature” provides immense challenges both in the fields of ecology research and environmental education.
  • CCRR believes that conservation and restoration ecology are “keystone” disciplines that will contribute to the reversal of environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity.
  • Both disciplines must be based in science and in scientific research; otherwise practitioners of conservation and restoration will simply protect “what they have” and rebuild “what they can”.

Why Should Research be Conducted at CCRR?

Ideally located:

Cruickston is a large, 370-hectare property comprised of natural, agricultural and cultural habitats that offers research sites such as floodplain and upland cropland; old field succession and shrub thickets; upland and lowland deciduous forests including old growth, older growth and replacement woods as well as conifer plantations; limestone alvars, cliffs and escarpment; and, river shorelines, coldwater streams and wetlands.

Ideally suited:

Cruickston is centrally located within the urban landscape of Southern Ontario, adjacent to the Grand River, a Canadian Heritage River.

Applications

  • CCRR will provide research opportunities to researchers who wish to establish long-term field studies or experiments related to ecology, especially as related to conservation or restoration.
  • All applications will be subjected to review by the Research Committee of CCRR.

Publications

Researchers are expected to submit papers to mainstream, peer-reviewed, scientific or technical press.
