Vision

Floodplain Landscape

Interpretive signage about natural and cultural history as well as demonstration plots exhibiting archaeology and restoration ecology will be established along walking trails.

The vision for the floodplain is to restore a mosaic of riparian habitats including meadows, shrub thickets and forest. The result will be a vibrant floodplain landscape whose riverbanks and confluence will continue to be protected from human intrusion and will offer a scenic vista reminiscent of earlier times. The natural and restored riparian zone of Cruickston Charitable Research Reserve will be a welcomed addition to the broader Grand River Valley ecosystem and become a significant element along this Canadian Heritage River.

Floodplain Landscape

The Fountain Street floodplain presents a co-operative opportunity to complete a link in the Cambridge Riverbank Trail System from Blair-Moyer’s Landing to Preston. This trail, too, will be seasonal-use primarily to respect the space required by bald eagles on their hunting perches during the winter months along this reach of the river. As a contributing link in the Cambridge River Trail System, this trail may be designed to accommodate both walkers and cyclists. Hedgerows of trees, shrubs, vines and ground cover will separate the trail from both Fountain Street and the floodplain.
